Compress PDF

Make a PDF file smaller. Files never leave your device.

Honest note: this works best on PDFs that already contain large or uncompressed images — it re-saves the file more efficiently, which can meaningfully shrink a scan-heavy PDF. It won't shrink a PDF that's already mostly text, and it doesn't re-compress embedded images the way a server-based tool can (that needs re-encoding each image, which isn't practical to do well in-browser).

How to use it

  1. Choose your PDF file.
  2. Press Compress PDF.
  3. Check the before and after size, and keep the file that downloads.

About this tool

Compress PDF re-saves your document with a more efficient internal structure, which can noticeably reduce the size of some files. The result box shows the size before and after, so you can see exactly what happened.

It does not re-encode the images inside a PDF, which is how large scanned documents are usually shrunk by server-based tools. If your PDF is mostly photos or scans, the saving may be small, and an already-optimized PDF may not shrink at all.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It varies. PDFs created by some software contain wasted structure and can shrink noticeably. PDFs that are already optimized, or that are mostly photos, may shrink very little.

Why does it not compress the images inside?

Reliably re-compressing images inside a PDF needs heavy processing, usually on a server. This site keeps everything on your device for privacy, so it only does the safe structural optimization.

Will the quality change?

No. The content is not re-encoded, so text and images look exactly the same.

My PDF is still too big. What else can I try?

If it was built from photos, make the photos smaller first with the Resize and Compress Image tool, then rebuild the PDF with Image to PDF using its Compress setting.
